Xenical for Rapid Weight Loss?

Generic Name: Orlistat

Front Image - ORLISTATWhy is this weight loss drug prescribed?

Xenical is believed to block the absorption of dietary fat into the bloodstream, which then reduces the number of calories you get from a meal sometimes resulting in rapid weight loss. Taken at the usual dosage level, it is believed that fat absorption is reduced by almost one third. Also, when combined with a low-calorie diet, it is used to promote weight loss as well as to discourage the return of the unwanted additional weight.

This weight loss drug is usually prescribed for individuals who are obese and for overweight individuals with other health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol levels. The body mass index (BMI) is usually used to determine your weight status by comparison of height and weight.

Important information about this medication for weight loss:

Along with the reduction of dietary fat, Xenical decreases the absorption of some fat soluble vitamins and beta-carotene. It is strongly recommended that you take a multivitamin containing vitamins A, E, D, K and beta-carotene once a day, at least two hours before or two hours after taking Xenical to compensate for the loss of vitamins and minerals.

When should this weight loss drug not be prescribed?

You should not take this medication if you suffer from chronic malabsorption syndrome, which is a condition that prevents certain nutrients from passing from your stomach and into your bloodstream. Also, you should not take this weight loss drug if you suffer from cholestasis, a blockage in the supply of the bile needed for the digestion of food. You should always avoid Xenical and similar weight loss drugs, if it gives you an allergic reaction.

How should you take Xenical?

It is recommended that you take this medication for weight loss during or for a period of up to one hour after each main meal. You should follow a nutritionally well balanced, low-fat diet that provides no more than 30% of its calories from fat. If you miss a meal, or the meal contains absolutely no fat, you can skip the accompanying dose of Xenical.

If you miss a dose…

You should then resume taking Xenical at the very next meal. Don’t try to make up the loss with a double dose as an extra dose will not help.

Storage instructions…

Store at room temperature in a tightly sealed container.

Recommended dosage of Xenical- Adults and children 12 years and older:

The recommended dosage for weight loss is one 120 mg capsule three times daily with each main meal containing fat.

Overdosage:

The results of a massive overdose on Xenical are not really known at the present time, although the drug seems relatively harmless according to most reports. However, any medication taken in excess of the recommended prescribed amount can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose seek immediate medical attention.
