Dr.
Phil, everyone's favorite talking fortune cookie, came out with something
called The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution: The 7 Keys To Weight Loss Freedom.
It's been extremely popular, despite the controversy surrounding his
endorsement of a line of defunct weight loss products. But is it a foolproof
weight loss plan for everyone?
Let's find out.
First of all, it's a weight
loss plan, not a diet plan. No matter how hard you look, you're not going to
find many of the daily menus, recipes, and other specifics that are the
hallmark of other fat loss programs.
Instead, Dr. Phil focuses on
the reasons behind your weight gain, and the reasons why you haven't been
successful with diets in the past. The process requires you to take a long,
hard, brutally honest look at yourself, your body, your lifestyle, and the
people around you. The goal is to dig deep to find the root cause for your
weight gain, and then fundamentally change your thinking, behaviors, and
actions so that you never have this problem again.
In my opinion, there are two
main reasons why the Dr. Phil weight loss plan will not work for everyone:
1. Some people have put on
weight because of a legitimate reason like pregnancy, or a recent injury
that's kept you off your feet for a while, or some sort of physical imbalance
or illness that has caused weight gain. For these people, there is no
deep-seated psychological reason why they've gained weight. And in fact, some
of them have never needed to diet before. If this is the case, then something
as drastic as the Dr. Phil fat loss plan is probably not the solution.
2. The other reason swings in
the exact opposite direction. Some people have been chronically overweight and
obese their entire lives, and the reasons why are buried so deep, and tied to
such painful situations, that they have been in denial in varying degrees for
as long as they can remember. While the Dr. Phil weight loss plan is targeted
specifically to this group of people, there are some who are "too far gone" in
their denial to be able to recognize themselves in his examples. If so, they
will reject the plan out of hand and instead resort to either a "quick and
painless" way to lose weight, or, worse, not attempt weight loss at all.
Of course, these are two
extremes. For the great majority of overweight people, there is a level of
honesty and self-examination that can be reached - and Dr Phil believes that
by studying the feelings that accompany an individuals thinking relative to
food, that they can begin to conquer the battle of the bulge forever.
The seven steps, or keys, per
Oprah's website, are as follows:
1. Take Ownership of Your
Reactions
2. Resolve Life's Problems
3. Decelerate Your Thinking
4. Challenge Your Thoughts
5. Gain Closure
6. Learn to Forgive
7. Cope Without Food
While these steps might sound
vague or even like a bit of psychological "mumbo-jumbo", the theories behind
these steps, as well as the mechanics of each, could not be clearer and more
important to a lifetime of successful weight management.
If you think that you're ready
to take on the issue of fat loss once and for all, Dr. Phil's weight loss plan
might be right for you.
