Anxiety Disorder Symptoms: Panic, Social
Anxiety & Phobias
Anxiety Disorder symptoms of panic:
Anxiety
disorder symptoms take many forms. Other pages on this website have described
several other forms of anxiety disorder symptoms such as those associated with
Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder. One of the most troublesome of the anxiety disorder symptoms
are those associated with panic disorder. Individuals with panic disorder
frequently have an overwhelming feeling of anxiety in which they may believe
they are suffering heart attacks and sometimes feel as if they are “going crazy”
for no apparent reason. Patients with these symptoms frequently resort to going
to emergency rooms due to the high level of acute anxiety symptoms. Some of the
primary anxiety disorder symptoms associated with
panic attacks or panic
disorder include heart palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, sweating,
trembling, tingling sensations, a feeling of choking, fear of dying, fear losing
control, and sometimes feelings of unreality. Panic disorder may occur with
agoraphobia, in which individuals are afraid of having a panic attack in a place
in which they may not be able to escape.
Social anxiety disorder (social phobia):
Social anxiety disorder symptoms are usually related to
feelings of extreme anxiety about being judged by others and behaving in a way
that may be potentially humiliating. Frequently, the intense anxiety results in
avoidance behavior. The main physical anxiety disorder symptoms associated with
social phobias include heart palpitations, faintness, blushing and profuse
sweating. Specific phobias:
Most people have some understanding of the anxiety disorder
symptoms associated with specific phobias. Specific phobias are intense fears
and anxiety symptoms which are related to specific stimuli in an individual’s
environment. Some of the more common specific phobias are related to fear of
heights, fear of flying, spiders, elevators etc. The most common phobia, which
is experienced by the vast majority of people, is speaking in front of a large
group of people.
All phobias have in common an intense fear associated with a
specific stimuli which then provokes an avoidance response. Most people with
phobias, realize the irrational response in relation to the actual threat
involved, but somehow feel powerless to manage their response in a more rational
way.
Final comment on Anxiety Disorder symptoms:
While many individuals find anxiety disorders to be incredibly
uncomfortable at the very least, and totally disabling at their very worst,
there is tremendous reason for hope. Treatments are available which will be
discussed on other pages of this website including cognitive behavioral
psychotherapy, exposure therapy, relaxation therapy and the use of various
medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s), tricyclic
antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, and monoamine oxidase
inhibitors (MAOI‘s).
